Water efficiency starts with the animal itself. Camels are physiologically adapted to arid environments in ways cattle simply are not. They can go extended periods with minimal water intake, tolerate significant dehydration without the health consequences that would affect cattle, and still produce milk under conditions that would sharply reduce or halt milk production in a dairy cow. This is not a marginal efficiency difference; it is a fundamentally different water-input profile for the same output of milk.
Land use follows the same logic. Camels can graze on sparse, marginal vegetation in arid and semi-arid land that cannot support the higher-density grazing or feed-crop irrigation that conventional cattle dairy requires. That means camel dairy can operate productively on land that would otherwise sit outside the conventional dairy supply chain entirely, rather than competing directly with cattle operations for the same high-quality pasture and feed acreage.
Climate resilience matters as much as baseline efficiency. As drought frequency and severity increase across dairy-producing regions, an animal that maintains milk production under water stress represents a more climate-resilient protein and dairy source than one that requires consistent access to fresh water and irrigated feed. This is a supply chain argument as much as an environmental one: a more resilient input animal means a more resilient product availability over time.
